"IN A SPIN ABOUT OZ" It's nearly three years since I first arrived in Australia and life has been quite exciting, writes Milton Westcarr. After finding a permanent job and buying a house, I have settled in well and continue with my hobbies: as a DJ playing reggae music and building bass speaker boxes. This has enabled me to meet lots of people and get regular bookings, not just in Adelaide but also interstate, including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Next year I will play at a reggae festival in New Zealand and currently I'm helping to organize a tour of Australia and NZ, for UK DJs. A major spin off is that I fly all over the vast continent and get to see the various cities and beautiful landscapes. I book flights from the Internet, using Virgin Blue or Qantas, and just casually hop on a plane 30 minutes after checking in. An hour or two later I arrive at my destination with records, microphone and sound effects, raring to go! After meeting my host/ promoter, we often do some radio shows and newspaper interviews, before attending the nightclub or festival for my live performance. I often get taken around the city to sight see, or to the beach for a swim during that weekend. There is a large scope for performers including singers, musicians and DJs in Australia and the crowd always appreciates artists from home and especially abroad. Another major development of mine out here has been the rebuilding of my mobile sound system called, 'Jah Trinity Outanational'. In the UK, my brother Terry and I and a few friends, used to play reggae all over the country for 18 years. We then sold the complete system to a couple in the Italian Alps. They changed the name to King David Warriors and now play all over Europe with it. I used my share of the sale to emigrate and pay for the airfare. Last year Terry came on tour with me DJing in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. In the past 12 months I have started my own business of designing and manufacturing, heavy-duty sub-bass boxes, for sale and distribution in Derringer's Music, which is one of Australia's largest retailer of Audio and DJ equipment. Setting the business named, "EARTHSHAKERT ® required plenty of research, capital and perseverance. I had to register the designs, trademark and logo at 'Intellectual Property' and register the business name for tax purposes. I have imported 18-inch, 600watt rms. bass speakers from USA and UK, to fit into the bass boxes, which I manufacture. The end result is an extreme bass system, which can be used in pubs and clubs or outside at rave parties and concerts.
