Milton on the move...

Moving from Gloucester, UK to Adelaide in South Australia

In October 1999 Milton moved from Gloucester UK to Adelaide Australia . The removal of personal items from one city to the other would take approximately 8-10 weeks using Allied Pickfords. They had a warehouse in Gloucester and another one in Adelaide, so I chose them to be my preferred removalist.

Pickfords have many branches all over the world and are very experienced in this field. They sent a company representative to see me and he calculated the cost of moving 30 cardboard boxes plus mountain bike, mirror and ironing board plus my essential speakerbox! I couldn't emigrate anywhere without music and sound system culture. Migrants always take their own culture with them and share it with the people in the new adopted country. This is evident the world over.

The price and date for removal was agreed and the 2 men came round promptly in August. I had taken days to pack these boxes and it was a nerve-wracking experience, because packing everything carefully for the long journey on the containership named "Ambition," took quite some time. I made sure nothing would break like my computer screen or special dubplates and records.

Many articles that were not being taken had to be given away, sold or binned. This is a ruthless process and psychologically draining on the mind, as you decide what to take and what to leave. I would strongly advise anyone faced with this situation to leave the junk and take only what you NEED . Otherwise you will be faced with a huge amount of junk to sort out in your new country.

It felt great to know that all of my possessions were gone ahead to Australia and that all I had left was a few clothes in my wardrobe. I felt quite liberated to know that for the first time since childhood I now owned hardly anything, apart from the few things in those boxes. I gave away my car; didn't own any property like a house anymore, that was sold and now it was just a case of pack that truck and jump on the plane with a one way ticket to Adelaide! (Saying goodbye to friends and family was very painful boohoo! but necessary).

When I arrived in Adelaide in October at my temporary address, on the Friday, the orange removal truck turned up on Monday with all my goodies yippee! Reunited at last. The driver and I, unloaded all the boxes quickly and efficiently and it was time to start my fresh new life in Australia . This is certainly a bold step to take, moving to a country on the far side of the world having never travelled there before, but it was definitely the best thing I have ever done. It was also what was needed at that time in my life.

Recording the whole moving process with my camera has been a great help because it has been a dream come true and shows the reality of emigrating. There are many lows when migrating especially when you are waiting for numerous things to happen positively and they turn out negatively.

On the other hand the highs are very good and can be appreciated when you have settled into your new country. Sunshine, exploring beaches; swimming, restaurants; meeting new people; activities galore too much to mention in this article, so just keep browsing the complete website to get the BIG picture!

If you are not happy or content in the country that you are living in, then why not consider moving to another country? You deserve to be happy no matter where you live in the world. Think about it then take action, time waits for no one.
